One Shining Moment – The Purest Form of Competition

March Madness is upon us.
It is the single most purest form of adrenaline and competition.
Young men and women dedicating an entire season for the chance to shine for the world.

You win, you continue
You lose, you go home.

If you are fortunate to be one of the two remaining teams and twenty-two young adults being watched by millions, it is magic.

Words cannot explain the feeling of walking on the court and knowing you are one two best teams in the nation.

It is the crowning achievement and for the select few that make that game winning shot, they will live in infamy as they legacy will carry over year after year as generations share in the memory of a poetic journey to greatness.

Let us set aside the gambling, the lost productivity time during this three week period and the behind the scenes deal to attract the top high school talent and focus on childhood dreams being realized. Thousands of hours on the playground escaping to a fantasy world where crime and poverty are not embedded into the framework of their lives. Every shot is a reminder of the dream to someday look into the stars and see themselves.

Words cannot explain the exhilaration and heartache that catapults through the veins of these players.

When CBS stumbled upon this song by Michigan Singer/Songwriter David Barrett and then lend the voice of Teddy Pendergrass, Luther Vandross and Jennifer Hudson, it was a match made in heaven.

Listen for a moment and absorb the power of this song:

The ball is tipped
and there you are
you’re running for your life
you’re a shooting star
And all the years
no one knows
just how hard you worked
but now it shows…
(in) ONE SHINING MOMENT, IT’S ALL ON THE LINE
ONE SHINING MOMENT, THERE FROZEN IN TIME

But time is short
and the road is long
in the blinking of an eye
ah that moment’s gone
And when it’s done
win or lose
you always did your best
cuz inside you knew…
(that) ONE SHINING MOMENT, YOU REACHED DEEP INSIDE
ONE SHINING MOMENT, YOU KNEW YOU WERE ALIVE

Feel the beat of your heart
feel the wind in your face
it’s more than a contest
it’s more than a race…

And when it’s done
win or lose
you always did your best
cuz inside you knew…
(that) ONE SHINING MOMENT, YOU REACHED FOR THE SKY
ONE SHINING MOMENT, YOU KNEW
ONE SHINING MOMENT, YOU WERE WILLING TO TRY
ONE SHINING MOMENT….

We all fantasize about that moment. Forget 15 minutes. It only takes a few seconds to gain immortality.
It is when you feel the highest point of life and the most fulfilling mission in life.

As we get closer to this month that brings families, friends, co-workers and teammates together, don’t just watch the games but mentally put yourself on half court as the ball is about to be tipped and realize the dream that is being lived out at that moment.

Life is about taken the few incredible moments, embracing them and holding on forever.

We should all have one shining moment!

Happy Birthday Mom (You are forever in my memory)

It has been several years since you passed away and I can still see you clearly in front of me.
I can sense your presence as I face each challenge in my life. You continue to be my special Valentine.

Today is your birthday
It was so difficult to think of a gift that would even compare to what you gave us each and every day. You gave us everything unselfishly and without recourse.

Every year I got a birthday card from you and it always made me smile. Not just because there was money. This is my birthday card to you.

You were the strength of the family and the glue that kept us close

It was in your wit and charm that I discovered my own personality
It was witnessing your courage as you battled breast cancer and diabetes that I found my inner fortitude

What was so amazing is how you hid your fears from us, because to us you were a pillar; a rock surrounded by a sea of uncertainty.

Thank you for continuing to provide life lessons by entering my dreams and thoughts.
Every morning I see a picture of you on my mantle when you were so young and had your whole life in front of you. I like remember you that way.

Today is a hard day. It is a second by second reflection on my entire life and how you were a part of every step.

I was the closest to you, so in a way it has hit me the hardest. It was hard enough to leave you for camp let alone to never have the chance to sit up at night and talk to you about everything.

I could not have been given a better honor in life than to have you as a mother. You made me smile, laugh, cry and most importantly think about life and challenge myself. You taught me right from wrong and helped me understand that people are fair and good.

You sacrificed your upbringing to raise me in a safe harbor where I would get an excellent education and be surrounded by nature, family and security.

I want you to know that you mean as much to me today as you ever did and you continue to be with me.

I want to wish you what would be a very Happy Birthday today and leave you with the words you said me every night before I went to sleep, “I love you”

Are you in the game? (Do You Have the Passion to Be Great)

Where is the soul?
Where is the emotional edge that grips us and reaches deep within our hidden fears and passions to ignite a flame that takes us to near heights of absolute euphoria.

Those were powerful words. That was the pure adrenaline that bleeds Red Bull from your veins and pumps your mental and physical juices. Don’t you love that rush. The feeling of anticipation right before something memorable is about to happen. Something that you will reflect on for years to come. A moment that will forever change your personal perception of life and being.

Some are fortunate to run out of a tunnel to 80,000 screaming fans, but most of us must rely on a much smaller fan base to motivate those raging instincts and bring us to the forefront.

Van Gogh and Mozart would be banished from this earthly soil before their genius was realized and now their works have donned the globe from the Louvre to Dancing with the Stars.

We are a flawed people. Not from the misfortune of a bite of an apple, but by our human nature of immediacy. We are narcissistic folk who thrives on flash reaction. We need to know that others feel something from our actions. Now, with the flood of social media, the entire world can know.

If you ask a couple that has been married for 70 years what the keys to success were that made their love last the test of time, you will find some very consistent responses. Patience, understanding and compromise. Hmmmm patience. Love takes time. Success takes practice. Legend is the immortal acceptance of triumph. That my friends is what makes phenomenal stand out from mediocrity.

How do I become phenomenal? ” I have to work, feed my family, and what little time I have left over is for rest from the daily challenges life throws at me. Life is hard.”

I think many of us have said something along these words in the past. Is you accept your place then you have settled on a life that can be legendary or fade away. The answer is simple. The true immortals make an impression on the next generation and the lessons they teach will carry over for many generations.

If you are the first man on the moon, you are immortal, but if you can teach you son to play catch and spent time with him on the swings, he will remember that as he grows up and passes these lessons onto his own children. You see, when the book of life is written, you have the potential to be as high on the ladder of greatness as Neil Armstrong, Theodore Roosevelt, and Charles Lindbergh.

So many times, we let the media dictate the value of life and it leads many to a state of depression.

Depression can suck the life out of you. It can take you to levels beyond repair without abandon or prejudice. It is a one of the most common diseases that is often overlook yet can be as deadly as the high profile bacteria and virus killers.

Eliminate the barriers that lead many to determine the value of importance. Burn the money, blind yourself from the fame and look right in front of you. You are a leader, a role model and most of all a future legend.

When you look in the baby blue eyes of a young child, ask yourself this, “Am I in the game?”

The Guardian of Death – Original Poem

Feel me penetrate the surface of the moon watching over you and pulsating a glow that corrupts your body with illumination

Heat and passion run like waves hiding under the clouds

Tones of gray and blue coat the fields of darkness awakening from a deep sleep

The sun fills the night with magic

Steady confusion brings stability to chaotic silences screaming in our heads

Sounds of music from an organ buried with the soil of memories

Layers of past, present and future deafen the soft sounds of life falling deeper and deeper into the core of lava and flames

Each second, another year

Each year, a fallen leaf

Each sunrise, a longing for the night

Each baby christens a new beginning to an already established end

The guardian sleeps for his job is complete

The gates to the grave, a new home protected only by the light of eternal darkness

Near but Gone – Original Poem

Dreaming away the night protected by the darkness that places a blanket over my fears

I am soothed by the familiar thoughts of a mother sitting next to my ailing soul holding my hand and putting a sea of peaceful waves into the corners of my mind

Lying on a bed of stones crushing the pores of my tortured body taken over by a death filmed in slow motion and repeated over and over in the theater inside my head

Each memory played in rewind until the blood covers my body and drips away what I cannot forget

I am drenched in a past that is tattooed in my memory with poisoned ink

Serving as a permanent reminder of my inability to reach out and return the same protection that provided security all my life

Now I am alone but always surrounded by the ghosts of a past that will never die

I look up, she is there

I look down, not to clear

To the left she appears; to the right nightmares aware

I close my eyes and with each second of darkness a million thoughts of visual agony formulate

It is a utopia of inner destruction taking over my body one moment at a time and never to stop until ashes remain

Adolescent Terror – Original Poem by Amy Tilden

This poem was written by a very talented 21 year old writer, photography, sketch artist and guitar player. I wanted to share this piece by Amy Tilden

We exist in a terrifying time
Hearts as cold as the machine that controls them
Tired, our bodies ache

Artificial sustenance feeds our hunger; feeds our soul

Life is a broken bone when your back is to humanity

We reach out to each other only to grab at nothing
No one is there
We leave a message after the tone

That dial tone sets the mood of a mediocre day

Breathing life out of ourselves and into technology
Growing up in an age of uncontrollable amnesia

WE have forgotten who we are

ProNet Charlotte – A Model of Community and Compassion

“A healthy social life is found only, when in the mirror of each soul the whole community finds its reflection, and when in the whole community the virtue of each one is living” – Rudolf Steiner

How do you define community? Before we dive into that element, we need to begin with the key elements that unify a group of individuals to form, harness and breath as a community. To believe in something greater than you and find others that share in that passion is perhaps the greatest sense of belonging one can find in one’s life.

What differentiates a great community from a good one is never having to be invited, but to find a path to the house of gathering. To belong and to share in something positive is to educate and be educated.

The virtue of community combining guidance, professional insight and encouragement has been discovered in Charlotte North Carolina with the foundation of Pro Net Charlotte. This professional transition community provides training, educational workshops, software, counseling and a home for displaced professionals that need the support and encouragement to weather these unprecedented times.

I had the fortunate opportunity to discuss how ProNet has affected the lives of a number of key patrons of this organization who have some insightful stories to share of their personal experiences.

One of the underlying themes that recurred throughout my many discussions was the feeling of community. For many of the members, ProNet provides an outlet of confidence and comfort during a time of uncertainty. Seeing others in the same situation and understanding their backgrounds, helps re-instill a sense of value.

Candice Szeliga, a Social Media Consultant when asked what makes ProNet Charlotte so successful stated, “Because it works. It builds confidence. You hear horrible news about the economy on the news and each week people are landing”

ProNet partners with United Family Services to offer outsourced counseling for those that require professional assistance to deal with the life changes.

Along with partnerships in counseling, computer software training and volunteer instructors, this organization has built “a community within a community within a community impacting the world” say Szeliga.

Job teams are an essential element of the infrastructure of this business model. These are small groups of ten to fifteen individuals that meet weekly to discuss progress, motivate, providing networking options and bonding. These groups are not a walk in the park but in some respects a boot camp. Overcoming adversity takes diligence and persistence. These groups work each other and ensure everyone is on task if they are willing to put the work in.

Bob King, a Sales Management Professional outlined Job Groups as providing:

Feedback
Focus
Direction
Support
Family – There are people out there for you providing support

ProNet started as a small networking group two years ago with one speaker a week and only twenty plus members. Topics varied from career planning to networking. Using CCPC as the primary location, it has now landed safely in downtown Charlotte. With funding from a Workforce Grant and private allocation, along with volunteer efforts from leaders from some of the largest companies in Charlotte, this architectural design is now an infrastructure.

Led by Steve Partridge, Managing Director of the Charlotte Regional Economic Workforce Recovery Initiative, ProNet has given a home to professionals in transition throughout the region. “Many knew there was educational value, but ultimately they wanted to build a community.” Partridge states.

Mr. Partridge outlined Tom Brokaw’s view that America has lost the grand community (4H, Community, and Church) and become a transient society. It is time to bring back that sense of belonging but this initiative is moving in the right direction. No matter how much we globalize, talent will still be the top skill and effective networking and relationship building is the key to personal and professional success.

“ProNet is a response to a crisis. We have become a society that is engrossed in technology. It is allowing us to do more with less natural/human resources. We need a greater conversation about entrepreneurial behavior and communications. Engaging people is their next move. It is about life long learning. No one is totally engaging in life long learning criteria. That is the thinking of the board.”

As Steve outlines, the board is an advisory board made up of corporations and workforce professionals who help to develop curriculum, structure and programming. These are all volunteers who are donating their time and expertise to help the greater good of the membership.

The goal is not only to assist professionals in transition, but also to retain the talent in the Charlotte area. The banking, construction, automotive, retail and energy sectors put tremendous diligence into bringing in talent to the region and now that there is a downturn in opportunities, it is critical to keep the talent in the area when the turnaround occurs.

Ann Marie Young, former Programming Director for ProNet Charlotte believes in the brainpower of Charlotte and the need to retain the talent brought to the Market by the big Banks and other businesses and organizations. “These professionals are not on the street due to anything other than Market economics. Our participants are educated professionals that were recruited and promoted most of their lives and very loyal to their employer – leaving little time to network in or outside of their industries. We teach these professionals to understand their personal brand and their value. We teach them the value of continuous networking in and outside of their industry.”

She is very optimistic about the growth and success of the ProNet Charlotte community. “Charlotte area employers are hearing about our efforts and beginning to hire from our group. And those that are hired become part of our ProNet Alumni community.” This Alumni community then follows the ProNet mantra to pay it forward – by volunteering or by getting their new employer involved.

Pay it forward

What differentiates ProNet from other workforce initiatives is the extreme generosity provided by the members, staff and advisors. Most members, when they have landed still maintain contact, provide new networking resources or give of their time for training/development workshops. It is their way of giving back for all they have received. Bernice Mar, a former member of ProNet utilized her expertise to provide counseling services to other members. She came to ProNet initially to gather information and help others but over time she saw the sense of community and hope that grew within her and others. The true value of ProNet is “that it stands out because it is based on volunteers.”

Praise cannot be measured alone on intangible metrics so we spoke to Mark Weber, Managing Partner of The Darton Group. When information trickled down to him about ProNet through his church group, he sent his wife in on a reconnaissance mission to learn more. Bottom line, she was “blown away” by the professionalism of the speakers and members. Mark was hooked. Since he began to volunteer, he has placed 5 and 7 members in consulting roles with his firm. Now a member of the advisory board, Mr. Weber continues to be an active member of the community.

What is next for ProNet Charlotte?

Steve Partridge sees the five year plan to make this a national model. With a redesign of the JobLink Center envisioned, more focus on younger members and corporate partnership, the potential in the region is tremendous. The recommendations from the board include bringing new talent to Charlotte, expand on the curriculum, get more employer presence, and building membership.

“At the end of the day, success is measured by jobs”, outlines Mr. Partridge.

ProNet Charlotte is about celebration. It is about the foundation and strength of community, the thrill of landing a new career opportunity, the confidence from building new friendships, and the fulfillment of lifelong learning.

It is rare in our lives that we find something that we truly believe with unconditionally. It is that sense of belonging to something greater than yourself where people help people that gives us a reason to believe that things will get better. As we continue to weather the storm of recession, remember there is a ray of sunlight shining over Charlotte. With the wheels in motion, we hope other urban sectors adopt this model of excellence.
