Celebration of Life – This is what a party for a 90th Birthday looks like….

Linda Hickle and Mom Together (All Smiles)

LOVE ME TENDER! A BIRTHDAY TO REMEMBER FOR MARY K HICKLE

Wow! This took some planning. Mary Katherine Sanders Hickle turned 90 years young last Saturday, July 21, and partied all weekend to celebrate. Mary Katherine (Mary K.) was born at home on July 21, 1922, in Laurel, MS, to James Wilford Sanders and Bonnie Mae Norman Sanders. She finished public school in Laurel, received a degree from Jones County Junior College and although her family moved to Memphis, she stayed in Laurel to work as a bookkeeper at the bank.

She met her husband, Lyman Leroy Hickle, while volunteering at the USO, married in 1945 and moved to Ohio. Widowed, she decided in 2002 to come south and live in Davidson close to her only child, Linda Hickle. She “hit the ground running” and in no time had a new circle of friends through neighbors in her Deer Park area, her church family at Huntersville Baptist Church, her Women’s Circle at DUMC and the Cornelius chapter of the DAR – and all groups were well represented at her birthday parties!

Elvis dedicated “Jailhouse Rock” to Davidson’s men-in-blue including Scott Misenheimer, party escort, of course!

Nine decades of birthdays have not slowed Mary K. Hickle one bit! She is a big NASCAR fan, especially fond of Michael Waltrip (she was there when he opened his Race Shop in Cornelius), and took some fast laps with a driver at Lowe’s Motor Speedway for her 85th birthday. (She wanted to go 185 mph. around the track to add her age to 100 mph. but the driver was only allowed speeds up to 165!) Mary K. is also a BIG Elvis fan so her daughter took her cue from “Elvis” for the 90th birthday bonanza.

Mary K.’s birthday weekend started with a dinner on Friday, July 20, at the North Harbor Club for her immediate family coming from Clarksville, TN, and Louisville, KY. Daughter Linda promised a quiet lunch at Sabi on Saturday and when Mary K. arrived (with police escort), a room of 100 well-wishers at the Asian restaurant surprised her with cheers and birthday greetings. The theme was “Elvis” and not long after Mary K. recovered from being “All Shook Up” and settled into her “Queen’s throne,” Elvis appeared in his rhinestone suit to croon a few tunes to his favorite birthday gal.

Elvis started with “Love Me Tender” and soon honored Davidson’s Men in Blue (Scott Misenheimer was the birthday escort) with “Jail House Rock.” He ended with Mary K.’s favorite hymn, “Amazing Grace.” Linda Hickle had her very own six girlfriend TCB Band decked out in sun glasses and sideburns (remember that Elvis’ band was TCB – taking care of business) to see that all the guests had name tags and signed the memory book. Grilled peanut butter and mashed banana sandwich (Elvis’ favorite with the recipe on each guest’s napkin) were also carefully prepared by Sabi (bet they don’t have that on the daily menu), and cake and ice cream were enjoyed by all.

On bended knee, Elvis presented Mary K. with flowers

When Elvis finally “left the building” and the crowd dispersed, Mary K. enjoyed a dinner at Sabi with her daughter, family and close friends. The party continued on Sunday morning with a brunch for 25 guests at Mary K.’s home which lasted well into the afternoon. Seems you can’t wear a 90 year old out! As the name tag stickers read, “Still Rockin’ at 90!” We congratulate Mary K. on her birthday and send best wishes for many, many more. Bet Linda is already thinking ahead to another milestone birthday but it will take some real creative thinking to top her mom’s 90th! What fun!

Happy Birthday Cat Stevens…Thank you for inspiring us with your words of peace and love

“I’ve been crying lately
Thinking about the world as it is
Why must we go on hating?
Why can’t we live in bliss?”

Peace Train – Cat Stevens

On this, the 63rd anniversary of the birth of Cat Stevens, we look back on a life of music and inspiration.

Born Steven Georgiou in Marylebone, London, England, Cat would extend his love for music with influences that included Bob Dylan, Nina Simone, Lead Belly, Muddy Waters, John Lennon, Biff Rose (who played on his first album), Leo Kottke and Paul Simon. He also wanted to emulate great composers including Ira Gershwin and Leonard Bernstein. Beginning in coffee shops and pubs, Stevens would play and shine as local on lookers absorbed his sound

In 1969, Stevens contracted tuberculosis where he became close to death. Later on after several months of recovery, Stevens was quoted as saying “to go from the show business environment and find you are in hospital, getting injections day in and day out, and people around you are dying, it certainly changes your perspective. I got down to thinking about myself. It seemed almost as if I had my eyes shut.” After this episode his took up meditation, yoga and metaphysics and began a personal transformation.

In 1976, Stevens nearly drowned off the coast of Malibu, CA. During this incident, he found himself shouting “Oh God! If you save me I will work for you.” He claims that moments after saying that a wave appeared and carried him back to shore. It was this second affair with death that he began to really seek spiritual truth.

He formally converted to the Islamic religion on December 23, 1977.

He would go on to marry and start a family and leave the music recording industry for 28 years. He has returned and through all the trials and tribulations of his life, he has allowed us to come along his journey through his music.

To Cat Stevens, we say Happy Birthday, Thank you and to continue to seek peace within yourself and around the world.

At 40, Earth Day is Now Big Business – Provided by the New York Times

At 40, Earth Day Is Now Big Business

So strong was the antibusiness sentiment for the first Earth Day in 1970 that organizers took no money from corporations and held teach-ins “to challenge corporate and government leaders.”

A participant at an Earth Day event on April 22, 1970, at City Hall Park in New York City.
Forty years later, the day has turned into a premier marketing platform for selling a variety of goods and services, like office products, Greek yogurt and eco-dentistry.

For this year’s celebration, Bahama Umbrella is advertising a specially designed umbrella, with a drain so that water “can be stored, reused and recycled.” Gray Line, a New York City sightseeing company, will keep running its buses on fossil fuels, but it is promoting an “Earth Week” package of day trips to green spots like the botanical gardens and flower shopping at Chelsea Market.

F. A. O. Schwarz is taking advantage of Earth Day to showcase Peat the Penguin, an emerald-tinted plush toy that, as part of the Greenzys line, is made of soy fibers and teaches green lessons to children. The penguin, Greenzys promotional material notes, “is an ardent supporter of recycling, reusing and reducing waste.”

To many pioneers of the environmental movement, eco-consumerism, creeping for decades, is intensely frustrating and detracts from Earth Day’s original purpose.

“This ridiculous perverted marketing has cheapened the concept of what is really green,” said Denis Hayes, who was national coordinator of the first Earth Day and is returning to organize this year’s activities in Washington. “It is tragic.”

Yet the eagerness of corporations to sign up for Earth Day also reflects the environmental movement’s increased tolerance toward corporate America: Many “big greens,” as leading environmental advocacy organizations are known, now accept that they must take money from corporations or at the least become partners with them if they are to make real inroads in changing social behavior.

This year, in an updated version of a teach-in, Greenpeace will team up with technology giants like Cisco and Google to hold a Web seminar focused on how the use of new technologies like videoconferencing and “cloud” computing can reduce the nation’s carbon footprint. Daniel Kessler, a spokesman for Greenpeace, said it was necessary to “promote a counterweight to the fossil fuel industry.”

In 1970, Mayor John V. Lindsay of New York addressed a crowd of tens of thousands in Union Square on Earth Day, in an atmosphere The New York Times likened to a “secular revival meeting.”

This year, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg will be in Times Square to announce measures to reduce New York’s impact on the environment. Using the same stage, Keep America Beautiful, an antilittering nonprofit organization, will introduce “dream machines,” recycling kiosks it is introducing with PepsiCo. The machines are meant to increase the recycling rates for beverage containers, which is estimated at about 36 percent nationwide.

Of course, a fair portion of the more than 200 billion beverage containers produced in the United States each year are filled with PepsiCo products like Mountain Dew and Aquafina; such bottle trash contributes to serious pollution on beaches, oceans and inland waterways.

Still, Matthew M. McKenna, president and chief executive of Keep America Beautiful, and a former PepsiCo senior vice president, said he jumped at the opportunity to have his former employer introduce its new kiosk at the event.

“We are not being asked to encourage the purchase of Pepsi or the consumption of their products,” he said. “We are asked to deal in the field with what happens when they get thrown out.”

While the momentum for the first Earth Day came from the grass roots, many corporations say that it is often the business community that now leads the way in environmental innovation — and they want to get their customers interested. In an era when the population is more divided on the importance of environmental issues than it was four decades ago, the April event offers a rare window, they say, when customers are game to learn about the environmentally friendly changes the companies have made.

Frank Sherman, United States green officer for TD Bank, said the company hurried to get its prototype of a highly energy-efficient bank branch building in Queens ready for Earth Day because that’s when “people are paying attention.”

The original Earth Day events were attended by 20 million Americans — to this day among the largest participation in a political action in the nation’s history.

This year, while the day will be widely marked with events, including a climate rally on the Mall in Washington, the movement does not have the same support it had four decades ago.

In part, said Robert Stone, a independent documentary filmmaker whose history of the American environmental movement is being broadcast on public television this week, the movement has been a victim of its own success in clearing up tangible problems with air and water. But that is just part of the problem, he noted.

“Every Earth Day is a reflection of where we are as a culture,” he said. “If it has become commoditized, about green consumerism instead of systemic change, then it is a reflection of our society.”

Happy Birthday to Me…Love, The Internet

Today is my birthday. What a way to make a plug for yourself. Then again a real plug would include my email so I can get random wishes of good will and pleasant celebrations. That leads me directly into the message behind today’s posting.

The mass evolution of the channel’s of communication has allowed for a global stream of celebration and self worth initiatives on one’s annual remembrance of birth. As of early afternoon I have gotten birthday wishes from high school friends to co-workers to ex-girlfriends on Plaxo, Facebook, IM, Email, Texting, Phone and Linkedin.

How does one keep up. More importantly how can I respond to the many many people that once a year go out of their way to show they care? There is the critical question of the day.

As you watch the Olympics and Days of Our Lives think about this question and I welcome any responses that help bring this challenge to a successful result.

I want to thank each and every person and perhaps I may do that this evening but I also want to maintain my sanity level.

This will involve some thinking on my end.

To add one more mode of communication to the list: The Blog

Happy Birthday to me!!!
