This is Charleston – Original Poem

charleston1

It is a rainbow of infinite memories
From the early settlers to the pioneers of tomorrow

Sailboats raise a symbol to the sky as the wind guides them off shore creating a finely stitched canvas of white clouds and ocean blue

From the tips of the church steeples reaching to the heavens to the remains of our forefathers resting in the sacred burials, Charleston is a blessing and gift

In its wonder, we are taken back in time to a cobblestone roads, horse drawn carriages and southern hospitality as sweet as the nectar on pecan pie

Once a shipping ground for slavery and inequality; now a harmonious settlement of integration, culture, dining and hospitality

Each morning, the sun rises over the harbor and welcomes a new day with open arms
Streets filled with life, the sound of music and aromas to warm the soul

This is Charleston

It is home to the world

Defining a global appeal, an artist sees a city with a marriage of nature and skyline beauty becoming one
Painting in his head a true masterpiece
Now this canvas, resting peacefully on the coast is laden in strokes of reds and blues
Always in flux as patrons pay homage to the city we love

This is Charleston

From the laughter of the children in the fountain to the love of an elderly couple embracing on the sand, this is heart of all that is good

This is Charleston; where the heart of the south reminds you of the beauty of life

Carey Murdock – Why should you be listening to him…

carey1

“I think music in itself is healing. It’s an explosive expression of humanity. It’s something we are all touched by. No matter what culture we’re from, everyone loves music.” – Billy Joel

“Music doesn’t lie. If there is something to be changed in this world, then it can only happen through music.” – Jimi Hendrix

“Music is a moral law. It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and charm and gaiety to life and to everything.” – Plato

With the release of his second album, Shot in the Dark, Carey Murdock has defined himself as a singer/songwriter with a voice and a message. This Augusta, Georgia native, now a proud member of the Nashville family first gave the music scene a taste of his deep soulful voice with Baby Don’t Look Down

With his vocals that resonate throughout the bar and youthful looks, he is reminiscent of Jonny Lang whose Minnesota blues sound set him apart at a very young age. The new album provides harmonies and chords that remind us of the early years of Bruce Springsteen.

During his set in Charleston, South Carolina on January 24, 2013 launching the North American CD release tour, he burst immediately into a high powered set of rock anthems, brought it down a notch and ended the set with some true southern blues.

After spending time in Europe touring and countless hours in the studio putting together this new album, Carey looked ready to bring his energy and songs to his fans back in America.

Typically, you will catch him on stage with a button down shirt, vest and jeans or a sports jacket. His style is part of what sets his image, but his voice and lyrics are what keeps you coming back.

Personally, I feel his anthem Augusta is a defining song. It is a dedication to the town that bore him, raised him and inspired. As he described it, many of his friends do not speak fondly of Augusta but he “begs to differ.” As you listen closely to his personal and emotional ode to his hometown, you cannot help but feel yourself on the streets of this Georgia town.

As he sang this dedication, I began to think of the musical icons of my childhood and their tributes to hometown America including:

Smalltown – John Cougar Mellencamp
My Hometown – Bruce Springsteen
Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town – Pearl Jam
New York State of Mind – Billy Joel

At the end of the day, no matter where you travel and how many miles you track, home is always right there safe in your heart. Carey took the time to remind us of that.

In a day and age where singer/songwriters get lost in the shadows, struggling to make a name and an audience, a rare few inspire us with lyrics from the soul and a sound send from high above. Carey Murdock is a visionary musician blessed with incredible musical talent, a voice with deep definition and poetry running from his veins.

If you have not had an opportunity to catch one of his sets, it is a treat. He will have you cheering and smiling all the way through.

Message in a Bottle

morris4

This morning I took the opportunity to spend a comfortable winter day on the beach and connect with the Morris Island Lighthouse on Folly Beach just outside of Charleston. As a gesture to the end of the year and the annual time of reflection, I wrote a letter. This was a letter to those in my past and those yet to be in my future. It is a message of thanks.

This letter was carefully placed in a bottle and sent out to the vast wide ocean. Where it ends up I do not know but what better way to send a message to everyone that has and will be in my life than to send it out to the most awesome thing on this Earth, the ocean..

Here is the letter that is hidden in a bottle floating in the ocean…

morris2

To all the wayward travelers of the world, on land and sea,

Life is a journey, corrupt to the core but full of majesty in very unexpected places.
With each passing day, we are faced with challenges and decisions that bring our virtues to the brink.
Life is not an easy path.

For some with faith in humanity and religion, it is but a test to the greater haven of eternity. For others it is an eager opponent strategizing the next move. We will transform from innocent children to mature elders and along the way create a scrapbook of memories. Not just to look back on and reflect, but to hand down to the next participants in this game of Life.

Today as I look out upon the ocean, I see my future and my past crashing down with each wave. Some high and mighty; some soft and subtle. The ocean is the truest metaphor of life. It is infinite to the human eye, more powerful than any living being and yet so soft and comforting as the waters coat our bodies.

I am in awe with each footstep in the sand I leave behind.

I yearn for peace, I pursue adventure, I welcome silent comfort.

That is just it.
All of it.

We all need a spectrum of emotion to make us complete.

I have loved and lost, like most of us.
Do I live in regret for any of the loves I have lost?
I do not.

Some have married, made dramatic change and achieved great success.
For those, I smile and continue to wish them well

Each life that has passed through me reinforces my commitment to dream. As I work to make my dreams a reality, I offer this letter of thanks.

The letter and the bottle that I place it in is a vessel being sent out to all those that have been a part of my past and those in my future yet to meet.

I toss this into the ocean in hopes someone will find and carry this message forward.

Smallest Heart Can Make the Biggest Impact – Allison Griffor (Death of a 5 Year old saves 3)

“In the shadow of death, life is given new meaning”

Allison Griffor, 5, donates heart and other organs to other children

By Brad Franko and NBC News 2 Charleston

Doctors were able save Allison Griffor’s organs to save other children in need. Griffor is the 5-year-old shot during an attempted home invasion early Tuesday morning.

A family spokesman said doctors used Allison’s heart to save a 2-year- old child. She was also able to donate to two other children. One of her donations went to a child at MUSC. Two others went out of state.

A family spokesman issued a statement Friday at Waterfront Park, in Downtown Charleston. Richard Douglas told reporters, the park was Allison’s favorite spot.

A Facebook page dedicated to prayers for Allison and the Griffor family also delivered the sobering news.

“It is with a very heavy heart that I have to say that our prayers for a miracle were answered, just not the way we had planned. Allison has been called home to her heavenly father. Her family made the decision to donate her organs, which will be the miracle that other children have been waiting for. through this she will live on,” the statement says.

William Griffor says, he and his wife woke up to someone trying to kick-in their front door the Tuesday before she died.

“I ran to the front door and yelled hey and was about to open the door to grab whomever it was when I reached for the lock there was a blast through our door,” Griffor wrote in the comments section of a story on Counton2.com.

He said, he grabbed his three kids and put them in the bedroom with his wife on the floor. It wasn’t until deputies came in, and turned on the lights that they realized Allison was shot.

Deputies are still searching for a suspect, and are working to see if a similar robbery is connected.

The Griffor family is asking for donations to be made to:

My Own Private Idaho…In the Heart of Charleston (The Remedy Market on Spring Street)

The Remedy Market on Spring….Where everybody knows your name and they’re always glad you came…

http://theremedymarket.blogspot.com/

162 Spring Street
Charleston, SC 29403

Let us begin with John, trended out behind the bar with his black shirt, sideburns and jeans ripped in all the right places to make even the Diesel designers jealous. With an occasional visit to the concrete patio to have a smoke, he is typically behind the bar with stories that you would hope to hear from the ring leader of a traveling circus. With attention to detail and a flamboyant style, he will take you to the ends of the world and back. Having left a very successful career, John has chosen a to pursue a path of helping the less fortunate. The Remedy is his stepping stone to a life of honor and modest reward.

Adaline has a smile that brings electricity to the room. No visit is complete without one of her warm genuine hugs. The better half of our owner and proprietor Billy, she brings beauty, intelligence and a feminine charm to this little gem. Ladies, she also makes a great wing woman.

Patrick and Ginger are the quiet residents of this Utopian facade. Anthony runs boats when not putting back a few Yuengling beers while Ginger will obediently be by your side if you scratch her back and give you a warm doggie to human hug.

If you see a larger than life Green Bay Packers fan with a cultural mix of Asian and Jewish, you are in the right place. This local may account for almost five percent of the total sales of this establishment and is a warm and welcome voice if you want a good micro brew and a friendly voice to share an hour with.

Back to Billy. When you meet Billy, you will see a fit tan man with dreadlocks and after five minutes the feeling that you want to go to his house for a Thanksgiving dinner. He isn’t your typical restaurant/bar owner. Billy is your neighborhood friend that you want to go out of your way to spend time with because he cares about who you are and values all the time you spend in his home. The money is a bonus. With a handshake and an introduction, you are an instant fan and with a selection of wine, microbrews, kava, coffee and some of the freshest breakfast and lunch/dinner selections in Charleston, one cannot feel a personal sense of commitment to The Remedy Market.

I cannot leave out the Stroh’s Artist. A man tormented and obsessed between the synergies of life and death, an artist whose weapon is patels and the canvas; a guitarist, bassist and drummer and without a doubt my life line in the music category of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. His bohemian lifestyle and acceptance of all things living is an aura of energy lacking in so many.

Tinkerbell is a cute curly haired geek you will see most nights. Not necessary due to her obsession with Nick the bartender, but her temporary adoption into the family. Spending her summer away from academic study at Duke University, she is another of the Remedy family that lets the night pass by surrounded by intelligent, humorous banter that leaves lasting memories long after last call.

On Wednesday, they offer an open mic experience where all are welcome to sing, perform or recite. Surging into the weekend with an outdoor music lineup, you have the opportunity for a neighborhood block party without the need to stay behind for cleanup. I cannot emphasis enough how open this atmosphere is, welcoming all ideas and beliefs in a sharing and collaborative environment.

Some restaurants provide convenience, excellent customer service, unique dining experience or exceptional food, but the rarest of qualities is passion. When you have an opportunity to walk through the door and experience a sense of belonging, deep energy and passion, genuine community and a positive sense of friendship you have a rare experience….almost like Neverland.

The Remedy Market is a place you can call home, where the door is always open for you, the beer is cold, the food is hot and every night the stage is set for a memorable chapter in your life.
