Watching The World Pass By

I sat on a bench this afternoon in the park and watched the world pass me by. This is what I saw:

A father and son practicing lacrosse against the cement statue wall

A group of student huddled in a circle on the grass studying

A girl walking her dog or maybe the dog was walking her

Clouds moving quickly as the leaves blow in the wind

A bird and squirrel hunting for the same food

A group seeing who can throw a frisbee the furthest

A young couple watching and smiling as their daughter is experiencing the world for the first time

Two people pushing each other as they finish their jog

Someone alone under a tree with a good book

The sound of nothing in the park with the faintness of passing cars

What did you see today as you watched the world pass you by?

New Year, New Day, New Outlook…

It’s over.
We lost loved ones
We gained new friends
We re-evaluated our lives
We took a new look at the world
We challenged ourselves to become someone different
We looked technology in the face and took the helm

Now what?

Monday starts a new day. For many of us we took time off to be with our families, friends or just relax away from the stresses of our work environment. Philosophically, we can all open our eyes in the morning and feel that the world is back to normal. The threat of job loses is gone, wages will rise once again, pension and 401K funds will hit all time highs and we an all sit back on the comfort of job security.

Ok, Lewis Carroll has left the building.

There is no truth in those statements. Tomorrow will not change. A New Year does not erase all the negative surrounding many of us. Unemployment is still high, we are faced with economic challenges that do not have an end of the rainbow in sight.

Let me ask you this: Is there any reason we cannot perceive that tomorrow is a better day. Perhaps if the collective sum of all of us has a positive attitude it will create a level of energy that will carry us to new heights. Belief in something big is half the battle of victory.

We chose fear many times over optimism because we do not want to be let know. If we expect the worst then the news is easier to take.

I feel we need to embrace the unknown. Take each others hands in the literal or figurative way and express yourself with a smile and a positive attitude. I think together, we can see the New Year as a new world of promise and fulfillment.

Embrace tomorrow and share it with me.

I Am Thankful….

Due to the timing of this segment, it may appear to be a personal spin on Thanksgiving, but the timing is the only similarity from my vantage point.  My personal feelings and my strong family foundation have taught me some very valuable lessons in life and ones I still question such as the success of the Ernest movies.

I digress…

This week I flew to New Jersey and unlike my typical introverted self, I was able to engage in a very nice conversation with a new member of the graduating class of life.  A fresh young lass with wide open eyes and a world in front of him.  It was nice to see ambition, ethics and a bit of shyness.  We all need some of those attributes in our lives.   Wow, I really used the word “lass”

Again I digress….

My father recently had a procedure that will require some therapy so I am playing in-house nurse for a few weeks.  Don’t get me wrong, I am in it for the free meals and the company but it is hard work.  He is making me clean the house, throw out my old books, drive him everywhere and worst of all, sit through episode after episode of Law and Order.

I value my time in my hometown, the house I grew up in and the bedroom I experienced my first life adventures.   The walls are the same tacky blue and the lampshade is covered with NFL team logos including “wait for it” the Houston Oilers…Now you can point out how old it is.   Fortunately the thick red, white and blue carpet has been replaced with wood panel tiles.   As I sit in a room I once thought was filled with spiders, built a lego wall to the ceiling, played nerf basketball with my brother, sorted baseball cards and studied long division, I reflect on the many things I am truly thankful for.   I have an amazing family, quirky but amazing, a strong foundation of friends, my health and a very positive attitude; even if my father is being a pain in the butt.  Then again we can all remember our parents telling us to be good because some day we will be taking care of them.  Karma has a funny way of showing itself.

Did I mention my inate ability to digress….

I try very hard not to watch the news or indulge in very much television or radio, but media is a powerful tool we cannot escape. We are surrounded by conflict, rage, war, death, greed, depression and poverty.   It is a time when there are so many unanswered questions yet we are void of answers.   A time where surrender is an option many have toyed with.  I see this as a time of re-birth; a fresh morning dew on a cool open field. We are all blessed with something more powerful than any known material item; life. The ability to breathe, love, laugh, cry, hug and feel has no value.   It is a priceless work of art that we have created and continue to create with each passing day.

I am thankful for the lives I have touched.
I am thankful for the voices that give me a sense of community and companionship.
I am thankful for the ability to be creative.
I am thankful for each day of life.

What about you???

The Spider Effect

Social networking is a set of communication channels that allows knowledge sharing, expertise and contact affiliations to harness and grow the global economy. We are all trapped in a web. Some remain stagnant as the web wraps itself around us while others continue to explore the endless possibilities of expansion and development.

The Spider Effect is the result of utilizing the social networking channels to achieve results in the backdrop of web technology.

I stand before you today sharing an example of the Spider Effect and how it was able to take a simple favor for a client and result in a solution implemented by some of the most talented experts in the field.

A former client of mine who is now with the Nycor Group in Minnesota reached out to me last week inquiring on recommendations for a Career Coach in Arlington, Virginia or Washington DC for a client of his. I being in South Carolina utilized my resources and reached out to three potential knowledge sources. I reached out to an internal partner from Hewitt who is located in Bethesda, Maryland, a contact who shares time with Virginia and New York City and a Career Coach and Online Radio Host in Melbourne, Australia. Are you following the path of virtual frequent flyer miles?

The Career Coach in Melbourne, Australia got in me in touch with the founder and CEO of Jobangels.org in Washington, DC who is now in communication with my former client in Minnesota to seal the deal.

Is this the first example of global networking without personal gain to be documented? I believe that not the case, but the ability to surrounded one self with strong focused professionals on a global scale is what made this simple request a reality.

The initial request was the result of a favor, which led to a second favor, which led to utilizing a trusting relationship with professionals without personal or monetary gain and putting that all into a complex macro calculation results in a positive experience for all parties.

Social networking continues to grow and panels and industry leaders document the advantages and disadvantages of the next industrial revolution. Thousands of technologies will rise and few will survive but I would like to share some of the simple tools and reminders of being a successful part of this new revolution.

1.) Surround yourself with diversified, focused and successful individuals that can push you to continue to harness yourself professionally. Do not stay industry specific or regionally narrowed but allow yourself to partner with individuals outside of your professional bubble. The sharing of knowledge wealth and concepts could provide that competitive edge that will put you above the rest.

2.) Stay focused and simplified. Do not try to dive into to many web portals or online communities. Find a select few that work for you and show an ROI for yourself or your organization and grow those networks

3.) Explore the realm of the unknown. Do not be afraid to try and fail. There are many cost effective solutions in the information superhighway. Invest in an opportunity you feel can become great and let yourself succeed or fail. If you fail grow from it.

4.) Never lose touch with the element that made this virtual empowerment possible: The human element. Stay in touch via phone, email, letters or networking events. You can get lost in an electronic world.

5.) Read and educate. There are so many free resources on the web (white papers, presentations, articles) that can provide new perspectives on understanding the operation of business. Use them.

6.) Visibility. Find your niche and expose it. If you have a writing talent; publish a blog. If you background is research get a white paper out there. Are your hidden talents photography or music then let the internet promote your special abilities. I am not saying become an internet celebrity but don’t be afraid to give yourself a pat on the back and let others know who you are. With Google Profiles, Slide Share, Twitter, YouTube and many other personal networks you have the ability to create a brand and grow with it.

Is this the complete recipe for success; no. There are many articles on how to take advantage of the Social Networking boom and I advise you to read as many as possible. Once you look in the mirror you will see two things: 1) Who you are and 2) Who you want to be.

Develop a marketing plan for branding your image and then set a plan to implement. Remember you are your own product and consumer is right in front of your keyboard.

Curb the Recession

Since the financial market massacre in October 2008 that virtually solidified the election for Mr. Obama to the monthly exiting of professionals young and old to the streets of umemployment alley, the recession has been on the forefront of many of our minds.

Many of us, including myself have friends, family and former colleagues that have seen their unemployment benefits come and pass and still no sign of recovery.

This has forced many of us to dust off our thinking caps and think of ways to help turn this thing around. I even have a few suggestions to throw into that presidential suggestion box. I am only thinking locally. I have yet to form a viable solution to end the global recession but the World Cup won’t hurt efforts.

This is a list of possible options to help gain additional revenue and put more bodies in the workforce to help stimulate growth:

1) Tax Garage Sales and Flea Markets – Do you realize how much untapped revenue there is from your neighbors, the local flea markets in corn field and all those new, used and black market products being pawned off. The recession is helping the flea market and garage sale industry by forcing us to look for cheaper options and how is our government capitalizing…..They are not.

2) Have Goldman Sachs hire the 17.5% that are currently unemployed. I am not suggesting 40 hours a week and full benefits for everyone. Maybe two days a week and partial benefits. Goldman Sachs is a global giant with the power to take down the Transformers and Megan Fox. They need drivers, assistants, assistants to the assistants, caterers, coffee makers, paper shredders, money makers, elevator operators, window cleaners and fiddlers. After a long day of trading, a good fiddler would cheer anyone up.

3) Copenhagan cost the tax payers 68,000 dollars per hour for the president to get eliminated from the Olympics consideration….Let’s think harder before we jump into that discrectionary spending

4) Balance of wealth – This one is a little more challenging but I will try to put it in perspective. Two years ago, the total wealth (property, liquid assets, material assets, building value…) of Morris Country, New Jersey’s second wealthiest county was 62 billion dollars. In that same period, Bill Gates total value was 64 billion dollars. I don’t think this needs further explanation.

5) No television, XBox, Guitar Hero, DVD, and VCR usage for one week. We are becoming defeated and lazy. Let’s force everyone to get off their couch and make change. Find a job, spend time with friends or volunteer. Change the routine around and make a fresh start.

6) Give 10 dollars to someone with the caveat they must spend it. As money gets tight so does our spending habits. If we give the money to charity or another person, they in turn spend it and it will create a spike in consumer spending

7) Less children. Maybe wait a few years. The United States took nearly 65 years to grow from 150 million to 300 million. It will take less than 7 years to grown another 50 million and 20 years to grown another 150 million at projected rates. Overpopulation and less jobs will create issues in education, food, quality of life and overall tensions. Slow down.

8 ) Take a vacation. I know you have been looking for that get away to leave it all behind. Go go go. They are cheap now and there are alternate options. Instead of doing a hotel air package, sublet a place by the beach for a few weeks. There are so many private owners looking to provide housing in many world vacation spots at half the price or more of the hotels.

There we have it, Recruitpoet’s first brain flow of thoughts around curbing the recession.
Thank you for your time and I hope you enjoyed the show.

Now I beckon my first cup of coffee. Until the next time, keep your feet on the ground…wait that was already used. Be proud of who you are!

Caution before reading

I got a call this evening from a friend to find out that one of her close friends died two weeks ago from a drug overdose and his body was found last night. I spoke to her for quite a while this evening as I walked the beach and admired the majesty of a bright pink sky setting into darkness as the warm waves crashed on my feet. My evening continued with a reflection of the moment I stared at my mother’s cold lifeless body and thought of what her final moment was like and how all the collected emotions must feel like right before passing on.

A tremendous amount of thought and deep soul sharing with my nameless audience. Yet through all this outpouring I may even walk away with a point.

We often throw around the terms “community”, “team”, “networks”, “relationships”, “unions” and “partnerships”. In our everyday interactions both in a social and work setting they have their place but also share a very true commitment to the importance and value of life.

We all need a sense of value and acceptance in our lives. Whether it is positive or negative, daily reinforcement of our worth provides meaning to each and every day we breath on this earth.
It is that meaning that shapes how others view us and more importantly how we view ourselves.

We need others. I value my alone time. It warrants me the time to think and reflect but I know that my community speaks volumes even if they do not speak at all as long as I have the knowledge they are there for me.

It is family, colleagues, partners, relationships, stranger interaction and even solicitors.
It is that collective community that influences our behaviors and thoughts, provides an avenue for communications, lets us feel comfortable to cry and laugh and is that voice of reason when we need it.

We will continue to live in a virtual world and human interaction will take a back seat. It won’t of course vanish from existence but we need to continue to remind ourselves how critical these human relationships are in our lives.

We need them them for our own sanity so that we can survive this insane world.
