Cancer is upon us
The tragedy isn’t death, it is being cheated out of a full life. Shortly after my birthday in late February, I received a very emotional call that a close friend was diagnosed with Stage 4 spinal and brain cancer. A one time survivor of breast cancer, this spirited soul was determined to win once again.
Yesterday the news came that it has spread to vital organs and now the clock has begun on the end of a young life. Stricken with cancer and coming to terms with the surreal inevitability of her death, we are all facing mortality through her eyes.
How do you say goodbye when you know how soon a life will end? How do you come to terms with family, friends, regrets, legacy and the pain that will remain with you until the very end? One cannot even imagine the thoughts running through her head morning, day and night. All we can do is be there, create some level of normalcy and try to hold in the emotions for her.
It is fascinating to observe the behavior and belief system that surrounds everything that is near her and other terminal patients. Faith rears its head high and proud, hatred succumbs at moments, fear fills the room with its prowess and hope lingers in the event that rare miracle sheds its light. It is a euphoric time when every possible human emotion is revealed. Because of that, it is a time that most cannot deal with or even comprehend until the moment it hits home.
I have spent countless hours at her home and in and out of hospital rooms along with her family and friends to give her all the attention, warmth and comfort she can muster. It is so difficult for her to move and just as difficult to watch her scream in pain. With every moment, the cancer cells forming in her bones are intensifying this pain to levels I can’t imagine in my wildest dreams.
Days are longer.
Thoughts are deeper.
Personal issues are put aside and the focus is put on one person.
This is a time that tests the human will. The will to survive, the will to curtail emotion and the will to give all of you heart to the person that is looking death right in the eye.
Are we losing the battle to cancer?
All talk about is about technology, innovation, advancement, automation but what about the dangers.
Musicians, athletes, writers, laborers, office workers all dying.
Do we need studies to see that a cell phone has radiation, preservatives have chemicals, microwaves send radiation into our food, speakers, MP3, cars, cigarettes and so much more. So much more that there is no point in going on.
We have the ability to win the fight or at least put up a fight but we don’t.
Through our own vices, addictions and greed we want to be put in the hands of the enabling devices that are making us susceptible to early death. But why? I don’t know. I don’t even begin to know.
All I know is that for the next few months, I am going to watch a scared friend count her last moments on earth.
When does it stop or are we in for a far worse future?
I love my friend. I don’t blame anyone. Not her, not a higher being, not society, not technology, not medicine. At this point, there is no room for blame, there is only room for healing. The greatest healing power is love. Being there for her for hours a day and telling her I love her is all I can do right now.
Our friendship took a back seat on that fateful day
The haunting stillness in the air freed the angels of death to reign on the broken bond that was once bound in blood
With one final glance you disappeared into the fog of a clear blue sky
Only memories remain
Darker and darker with each passing day
The thought of long auburn hair blowing in the wind
The touch of you fingers on my face one last time
The sight of the blue in your eyes soothing my failing youth
It was a time of yesteryear
A time of innocence
A time of comfort where the words from your heart warmed my senses
Each day, thoughts shared without a spoken word
Moments of reflection became a symphony of bliss
A force guided us home when lonely was our only friend
A stronger force showered away the laughter and broke the chain
Now, time is the enemy as I prepare to look into my past
It is you that forever remains in the hourglass of time drawing sand to the ground leaving our memories behind
The winter is gone
Fear is no longer
The apocalypse that penetrated the soul strengthened the bond of friendship
In a moment of dire weakness, a power lifted from the trenches of the past and cemented a movement for peace
In this chaos, a calming silence spreads across the sky on leaves of red, orange and yellow
As the morning dew awakens a new season, a reunion of hope is brought once again to light
A unity of unspeakable grace
A pact written in the purity of smiles and forever written in the journal of life
An enemy penetrated our fortified home that thousands of miles could not break and united as one we overcame the beast
It is this moment, now in the dawn of a new day that the sun rises and shines on the faces of humanity
In a warm brush of the canvas, reminds us that friendship is a power greater than mankind
It is the strength of a thousand horses, the whisper of a young child and the smile of a newborn
Time is the physical journey we each must take in our chosen path; yet with each mile, we are closer as one
Today we gave a fond farewell to a manager, leader and most of all, a friend.
As she departs the humble walls of Hewitt for a new challenge, we took time to reflect on the shared memories that carried us through some very life altering changes. With the backdrop of a new leadership team, a new model and a recession, she took the helm with poise, confidence and even a hint of vulnerability.
In her steps we followed. It was a path of uncertainty filled with jagged edges and foggy skies but we always had support on our side.
She took chances, gave guidance but most of all let us fall and get up on our own accord.
Her legacy will be different for each one of us. Some will see her in a professional light while others have a much more personal view of their relationship with her.
Either way, the message was clear, she made a lasting impact on all of us that will carry long after she has walked away from her throne.
A catalyst for change when change needed to be embraced
A warrior in a battle with an unknown enemy
A cheerleader on a team that was ready to step on the field
A mentor for those that didn’t even realize there was so much more to learn
She created a family of thinkers and believers that continue to stretch to new heights.
For that, we thank you.
Thank you Cynthia for taking Hewitt Associates and Sourcing to the next level.
As she walks away, head held up with pride, we continue on carrying her mission with each new day.
