Why The Dark Knight will Rule the Summer of the Super Hero…

It is hard to imagine any film will top Marvel’s The Avengers who has taken in $513,672,000 after 24 days domestically and $1,295,272,000 worldwide making it the fourth highest grossing United States film and worldwide film of all time. In light of the spectacle image on the silver screen of action, violence, and good versus evil, there is another.

There are several things the public flocks to and why Batman will rise to the top once again:

1. Conclusions. If it is the end of a journey, legacy, a series we need to come to closure and see how it all plays out.

2. Darkness and the unknown. There is something about evil that makes our blood bubble. Why else do we flaunt deaths on Twitter, watch the evening news to find out about the murders and violence and secretly desire to find the misery in the world? Because it is exciting. It is the dark mystery of the underworld that creates the ultimate fantasy that most of us will never experience.

3. We are all flawed. We all battle our inner demons. If we can find someone like that to relate to, we cling on. If a flawed man can overcome his deepest issues to achieve greatness, we all have hope.

4. We want to believe that good will overcome bad. Deep down inside, we all inherently want a better world to live in.

5. Christopher Nolan is a directorial genius. He has not only resurrected a dynasty created by Tim Burton and Joel Schumacher but has taken it to levels that no one could have imagined. No offense to the legendary performance of Jack Nicholson as the Joker in the 1989 blockbuster, but Heath Ledger defined a career with his adaptation.

6. Awesome machines and vehicles. We love the cars and motorcycles.

7. Anticipation + strong script + great cast + great performances = Many many dollars

8. It’s Batman!

The Avengers did a nice campaign of trailers but it was build on a community of heroes who have been successful on the silver screen for many years (Except for The Hulk) and this collaboration has carried this film to global heights. There is no question, this franchise will continue, but….

Batman is a journey of discovery. It is a man fighting his past to wrong a right and then becoming a voice of a generation. No all agree with his vigilant behavior and those close to him understand his flaws, but in his revenge he found a calling, one that must see itself to its rightful end. How will that end? I don’t know but we all are eager to find out.

I know there are many of us, self included that wish to see another performance by Heath Ledger, but if I know Christopher Nolan, he will not disappoint the fans. If the posters, trailers, hype and pure adrenaline are any indication, the weekend of July 20th may be a very memorable one for Hollywood’s pockets.

Rocky IV – A Defining film of the Cold War Era

“I came here tonight… and I didn’t know what to expect. I’ve seen a lot of people hating me… and I didn’t know… what to feel about that, so… I guess I didn’t like you much either. During this fight… I seen a lot of changing: the way you felt about me… and the way I felt about you. In here… there were two guys… killing each other. But I guess that’s better than million. What I’m trying to say is… if I can change… and you can change… everybody can change! I just want to say one thing to my kid… who should be home sleeping. Merry Christmas, kid! I love you!” - Rocky Balboa – Rocky IV

The thought of any Rocky movie especially Rocky IV brings the immediate thought of one of the ultimate guy films. Great soundtrack, hard hitting, emotional story and a great us vs. them theme. Recently, I had an opportunity for about the fifteenth time to watch the film once again bringing back memories of watching the movie with my brother at the AMC Theaters and thinking wow, that was awesome. Twenty-six years later, it is still just awesome. But on this occasion, I really started to look deeper into the underlying theme of the film and the importance it had from a political and economic standpoint. With the Hollywood prestige Sylvester Stallone received with the writing and direction behind the original Rocky release, he was able to leverage that in a way to make bold statements while still entertaining fans around the world.

You do not have to be an analyst to see that in the midst of the Cold War, a film about a Russian boxer and American boxer was much deeper than a revenge bout in the middle of Moscow. This was a statement of peace. It may have come across as a little campy and maybe even a little over the top with a full Broadway production of “Living in America” by James Brown and a montage of Rocky’s past while he floors 100 plus miles per hour in his Ferrari, but the key theme remained intact.

Russia and the United States were the two most powerful nations in the world. With the fire power in nuclear armaments to destroy mankind, we stood on the brink for over a decade utilizing political and military strategy to avoid World War. To a lesser degree in an ABC Afterschool Special kind of way Amazing Grace and Chuck and The Day After both made very bold filming statement protesting nuclear armaments.

This was a time, before the age of instantaneous communications when statements were well structured and celebrities had tremendous influence in shaping sentiment. Stallone had already tackled the integration barrier by solidifying a life long friend cut short with Apollo Creed and now he had an opportunity to expand his influence on a global scale and did he succeed.

Making over $300 Million worldwide, it is ranked as the #1 Boxing film and #2 Sports drama film of all time according to box office figures (Box Office Actuals)

The fight could have been enough. The ultimate David vs. Goliath showdown in enemy territory surrounded by hostiles. In the end, not only did Rocky come out victorious by changed the enemy to a friend. With the Russian down, Rocky in the air and a crowd chanting his name in unison, it was the perfect ending but alas the speech. With just enough energy to muster a few last words, Rocky gave one of the greatest sports speeches short of Gary Coopers’s Lou Gehrig in Pride of the Yankees. We can all change and we can look within ourselves and find peace.

Today, Hollywood and television have taken more risks to exposure political, economic and military unrest and movements are now a part of our every day lives. Today in Moscow, hundreds of thousands are protesting in 10 degree weather to avoid the re-election of Vladamir Putin. Power in numbers is power indeed. Not to say that Rocky IV was a pioneer film that utilizes the popularity of Hollywood to bring awareness to a cause, but it was a defining piece of cinema for a generation.

If it has been a while since you have witnessed Rocky IV, take some time and watch it again with someone you love.

Lessons Learned from Lucy – Happy 100th Lucille Ball

As we reflect on the life and impact of Lucille Ball on this the 100th Anniversary of her birth, we would like to provide a few lessons learned and impacts Lucy made on society and the entertainment industry.

1. You can be the most powerful entertainer in the world and be a female (You are very welcome Oprah)

2. You can be funny, witty, zany and still maintain sex appeal.

3. Lucy taught us that we can push the buttons of accepted television viewing with her relationship with
Desi and the birth of her child (The first pregnancy on network television).

4. In black and white or color, Lucy was still amazing to watch

5. As a shrewd marketer and businesswoman, Lucy found a way to find success in anything. In the summer of
1950 after being unable to convince CBS that her and Desi could be a believable TV couple, the two of
them went on tour performing before live audiences, and early in 1951 they produced a film pilot with
$5,000 of their own money. I LOVE LUCY was given a fall time slot and the rest is history.

6. When she was on top she stayed there. In the six year run of I Love Lucy, the show never ranked below
third in the ranking system and the decision to film the show vs. live audience so that it could be
used in syndication and translated in languages around the world set the standard for today’s
programming. Also, in its sixth and final season it ended number one in the rankings. Only the
Andy Griffith Show and Seinfeld were able to achieve that
feat.

7. She looks great on your mail. In 1998, as part of the U.S. Postal Service Century series, Lucy became
a permanent fixture on envelopes around the globe.

8. A true entrepreneur..Lucy and Desi were the first couple to own their own studio. She is a role model
for start ups. Who would have thought. Also, two years after their 1960 divorce, Lucy bought out
Desi’s share of Desilu Productions to be the head of the studio.

9. In January 1953, Lucille Ball and her son were the very first to appear on the cover of TV Guide
Magazine and later would appear a total of 39 Times (You are welcome Kim Kardashian and Jennifer
Aniston)

10. In October, I Love Lucy will, in first run and syndication, have been on the air almost continuously
for 60 years. How is that for longevity and stamina.

Though we lost Lucy in 1989, she never left our hearts and for generations to come will remain a pioneer and an icon to fans, actresses, comedians and business professionals for her talent, intelligence, wit, charm and beauty.

Lucy is a true one of a kind.

Thank you Jamestown, New York, Henry Durrell Ball and Desiree “DeeDee” Evelyn Hunt for giving the world Lucy

We truly love you Lucy.
