Time for a Rebirth (Leave your footprints on life)

Seeking a Friend for the End of the World was billed as an apocolyptic comedy but after all the laughs and surrealism about a total global demise it was a romance about two people that saved each other and found true unconditional love. Melancholia, a global apocolyptic film from 2011 was a tragedy that celebrated family and the love they shared. Earlier tonight, it was confirmed that Nora Ephron passed away at 71. A writer, essayist and comedic romantic that brought us When Harry Met Sally and Sleepless in Seattle. One theme carried her throughout her illustrious career and that was the power of love and laughter.

Losing a friend, especially at such a young age puts your life in perspective but defining her life and her legacy has had a much more powerful message. Spending countless hours and putting my own life on hope to seek out the true wisdom Michelle had to share and releasing the love we all shared for her each and every day of the final months of her life brought me once again to a better place. Through spiriality, happiness, comfort and love, Michelle fought cancer the way she lived life as a free spirit that was strong and embraced the ones she loved.

Life is about a series of moments both good and bad. Some pierce while others graze the skin, but each one of these markers in life feeds us food for thought and helps shape the next direction we choose. I think we need to see each day as a rebirth. It is an opportunity to begin a new journey and build off the ones from the past. Each day of life is a gift. You don’t have to see children dying of tragic diseases or infants that die shortly after birth to know how lucky we are to be in this moment, breathing, living, sharing and feeling.

I just completed a remarkable trip with my father that unfortunately began with seeking and gaining closure with Michelle. It was from her mother’s unspoken urging that I spoke for a few moments to her family and friends at the funeral home but one I would not ever regret. As I stood there, not knowing what to say and even feeling like the outsider looking in, the words started to flow. Not because I am a word smith but because the love we gave to her and the love she gave back ten times over gave me the foresight to share stories, personal feelings and lessons she wants us to carry all our days.

While on a trip to Charlotte a while back, I asked my friend Marcus if she could keep Jack and Lola at his house in Rock Hill with his one year old daughter. Marcus being the amazing friend he is of course said yes and Bethany instantly fell in love having a dog on each side of her on the couch. When I broke the news of Michelle’s diagnosis to him I remember so vividly what he said: “It is amazing how someone you only met once could have such an impact on you”. I cannot think of a better way to describe Michelle. Whether you loved her to death or thought she was crazy, she made an impact.

So many of us use sarcasm to hide our feelings or make fun of others we are jealous of. We stereotype and prejudge and tend to avoid the one thing that in the end brings us all together: love. What is the fear of love? I can spend volumes trying to interpret that last comment, but I would rather spend it telling the truly important people in my life how much I care about them and instead of waiting to get old and die, start living.

After leaving Ohio, we went to Toronto, Mississagua and Niagara Falls and there were moments I thought about her lifeless body but most of the time I thought about Michelle and smiled. Each summer along with the many other times I spend with my dad, we take a father/son trip north. We have our moments of disagreement, but always the trips with him are memorable.

I too sometimes hide behind my thoughts and words, but I try very hard to make each day unique, memorable and full of as much love as possible.

When you wake up in the morning, think about who is important, tell them and find a way to make each day a personal triumph full of happiness and laughter. At the end of the day, those are the memories that stick.

What are you waiting for? – Seize your moment

“The future starts today, not tomorrow.” – Pope John Paul II

I have seen enough love pass me by to say enough is enough. What are we afraid of? As we sit back in our safety net and shield ourselves from the perils of life, the only certainty that follows is the closer we get to death.

How many friendships have been lost because someone felt the other may want more and they were afraid to confront the situation?

How many relationships failed because of the fear of falling in love?

How many dreams unfulfilled because of the possibility of failure?

How many passions unrealized because we guard against risk?

Life is moving forward second by second, minute by minute, hour by hour. How cliche is it to say “life is short” or “live each day as if it is your last”. For most, waited words either on ourselves or others. We don’t live each day with “purpose”. We live each day in comfort by going to work, saving our money, living within our means and hopefully retiring with enough money to live out our lives.

As a child, we are not awakened to the realities of adulthood. The greatest gift our parents can give us is allowing us to dream without limitations. We see a universe that never ends, buildings we can leap over and fantasies of heroism and romance.

We tell our children we love them each and every night before they go to bed, but not often enough to our life partner. Children will get on a bike or skateboard, fall and get up again until they master the art of the ride? How many of us change our commute to work..ever? Children want to be the greatest in the world. Adults want to live through the week so they can go fishing?

Are you seeing the issue here?

We are fragile beings who truly can see life reach a bitter end with one mistake, one error of judgement, one unfortunate twist of fate. We are the most delicate beings woven into a complex machine with one unique feature that sets us apart, the ability of rational thought. We are gifted with the minds to dream and achieve.

Nothing brings people together and forces them to re-evaluate their lives more than tragedy. It is this phenomenon that presses our invisible reset button and for a moment, just a moment puts us in a place to look at life’s path and determine if it is the right course. That moment fleets away very quickly and we slip back into the routine that we have grown to be so comfortable and safe with. It is comfort and routine that we embrace, not risk and uncertainty. How ironic, for the true dreamers, the immortal legends, the pioneers ignite their inner child to achieve the impossible by taking risk.

I can’t tell you how to lead your life or judge whether what you do is right or wrong. All I can do is this; remind you of who you are and what you are capable of. Do not sit back and let this gift of life pass you by. It is a gift, a wonderful exciting gift.

You are born with an unshaped legacy that only you can mold and sculpt and thus become an immortal soul.

We never have yesterday or tomorrow; only this moment.

The Baby Unicorn Has Arrived – Welcome Tino

“No matter what you’ve done for yourself or for humanity, if you can’t look back on having given love and attention to your own family, what have you really accomplished?”

Elbert Hubbard

We got the text we had been waiting all day for.

“She is dilated 9 centimeters and are looking like it may happen as soon as 8 PM.”

It is 7:15 PM now and we are not only 30 plus minutes away from the hospital, but there are cards, flowers, chocolate covered espresso beans and energy drinks to be bought. Without hesitation we departed the salsa filled bar and headed to the car. With the wind in our hair and the convertible top down, two childhood friends and a self proclaimed best friend set out to be a part of something very special.

This was just not the birth of a child, but a miracle almost four years in the making. Given the struggles and tests to their will and power as a family, this night was to become some much more important than all of us.

As we arrived, just a few moments before the first cry and big announcement, we saw both families, waiting patiently, with the back drop of the Twins game just above. Grandparents, uncles, aunts and friends all greeted us with smiles and hugs. As we sat and waited, the realization of how each of these lives would change was starting to become a reality. To add more drama to increase our heartbeats even further, we learned of an earlier scare where there was a drop in the heartbeat detected in the baby. Fortunately, the doctors and nurses corrected the concern and the waiting period continued.

The two grandfathers talked about whether he would become a baseball player, golfer, bowler or football star. The grandmothers and friends talked about the pros and cons of breast feeding and apparently the profitability of doing it for other people’s children. We will leave that segment out for the moment. It soon turned to what was about to happen and how each person in the room dealt with a similar situation when they bore their children.

As I watched two generations about to welcome in the third and realized how much the mother to be and I had been through together in the best and worst of times, I felt a relationship with a baby that was yet to leave its mother’s womb.

In a moment, the new father’s sister appeared in the doorway with camera in hand shouting “He’s here”
Like the 3000th hit or the game winning home run of the World Series everyone got up and cheered and hugged and lived out one moment of perfection forever etched in our box of memories. Mother and son were healthy and with a deep push a new life entered this world. It is amazing when you think that something so small and so innocent can have such a penetrating effect on so many people.

Now, seconds, become minutes and minutes eternity as we all waited to greet the little angel into the world and hold him up as we rejoiced not only for his journey, but how his little smile saved us all and made us believe once again in the miracle of life. Many were comforted by the instant gratification of the birth video that was passed around the room. I of course took my leave from the room for a few moments.

The nurse, in her welcoming blue outfit was soon standing in the doorway and we all knew. Then the words we had all waited to hear were vocalized, “You can all go in to see the baby now”. Grandparents first of course and then the rest of us shortly behind. As we all crowded into the room, the dimly lit room became illuminated with smiles all around the bed surrounding the mom and baby comfortable side by side.

Grandpa broke out the bubble gum cigars, as one by one mom received hugs from all her family and friends as dad held his baby boy. He was a natural. The baby just fit right in his arms. As exhausted as he was, given that he was there for almost 14 hours, he still had the energy to smile from cheek to cheek.

One by one, the motherly and fatherly instincts came out in each and every person in that room as they held baby Tino for the first time. With some, an instant connection was made as the eyes met and in one synchronized motion both seemed to smile at one another with an unspoken gesture.

As pictures were taken, conversations happening, hugs being offered and a nurse continuing to maintain some order, my focus remained only on the baby. Almost like a moment of complete focus, I was able to block out all noise and movement to see the perfect face of this newborn. At no other time in our lives are we this close to purity. It is a moment where you have the chance to share in the energy of this newborn and feel more alive than you can imagine.

Soon, we new the evening had to come to an end so the mother, father and child could rest together as one family in each others arms. When they awoke the next morning, they could look at baby’s first sunrise and know this is the first day of the rest of their lives together.

I have witnessed so many global events that have inspired, sporting events that have been deemed modern miracles and gestures that have moved nations, but the truly great miracles of our lifetime bear in the act of creation. Thirteen people stood in a small hospital room sharing in the greatest gift, the most amazing miracle life has to offer. It is a moment we will all remember and cherish.

Last night we were all family….sharing in the first and only official birthday of Tino.
Yes, it was made official as the entire room sang “Happy Birthday” officially calling this day, the day of his birth the one and true birthday.

To Sonni and Sam, the amazingly supportive grandparents, siblings and friends, THANK YOU for letting us into your very private moment. It has been an honor to be and continue to be an important part of your life.

To The One…You Engaged My Senses and Brought A Moment of Perfection

I’ve been lucky to have known you.
I’ve been fortunate to have loved you.
I’ve been blessed with the fortitude to have a moment of completeness in my life as you passed through exciting my senses and warming the energy around my heart.

You know who you are for you have carried a piece of me with you everywhere you turn.

It is that shared moment that defined a life, that determined a destiny, that felt once again.
Sometimes the hardest part about letting go is realizing that that moment had to happen in its entirety and then let go for the wind to take it away. It is a shared moment of finite perfection that is meant to last, not the eternity of mediocrity hoping to reengage once again what slipped away.

I don’t know what drew me to you other than it just did. It was a tsunami of euphoria that captured my mind, body and soul and swept me into the bottomless abyss of the ocean. Without you, I would not have now; without now I cannot sit here and think of you.

I was fortunate to have been put in a translucent state where destinies found their way to each other and then let their course run. I am not sure if we had control of the time we spent together or time dictated our every word. It is a story that may or may not sometime be told by generations after us.

Those moments are forever on the tombstones of the cemetery in our minds with each stone written the words of our love.

It is within you that I write this

Forever yours….

Bleeding the Colors of Life – Original Poem

It is indecision that paralyzes progress

Words are a blanket sheltering action from the frozen ice storm

Don’t blink for life will pass by

It is moments, instantaneous actions of the heart that will define generations

We are the keepers of the future of the hallowed museum of memories past and future

The walls speak volumes of mistakes made and promises forgotten
Learn from the education of our elders and the innocence of our children

Our time is sketched on the canvas of life bleeding the colors of wonder

It is the embrace we all fear; the leap into the abyss of possibility that will cultivate in the greatness of fortune and eternalize the meaning we all search desperately for

The answer to the one question that hides within us is resting, waiting for the great awakening
