  1. Mark: It took me a long time to learn what you have encapsulated here. When I first got online and became aware of all the networking potentials, I had no way to evaluate any of them so I just signed up for every free offer out there, and a few paid offers as well – not too many cause I didn’t have the budget.

Anyway, over the years, I’ve seen literally hundreds of networking sites come and go. If I look at why a program failed or succeeded, I see a pattern – lack of compassion and true connection, the willingness to nurture and develop relationship, the tendency to reach out only when something is needed, etc.

I’ve been guilty of all those patterns too. At first, I just looked at networking potentials for what they could do for me. This did not even feel inappropriate to me until I started building true networks with a few people. Then, looking back, I could see how ineffective the other potentials were in comparison.

Over the years, I learned that I would benefit most from treating networking the same way I treat my spiritual partnerships – by giving more than was expected, by expecting no return for helping, by putting myself in the other person’s shoes, etc.

I learned these things from networkers with character, integrity and compassion.

Thank you for this article. It needs to be said.
